Laminated glass permanently bonds two or more panes of glass with one or more organic polymer interlayers. The assembly is prepared by high-temperature pre-pressing or vacuum processing, followed by heat and pressure, so the glass and interlayer form a single composite product.
Interlayer options
Common interlayer materials include PVB, SGP, EVA and PU. Each material has its own processing behaviour, so the interlayer is selected together with the glass make-up and intended application. A laminate may contain a single interlayer or several layers between multiple panes.
Both low-temperature and high-temperature laminating processes are used, depending on the interlayer. Production method and interlayer choice are therefore part of the specification rather than interchangeable finishing details.
Decorative constructions
Laminated glass can encapsulate materials between the panes to create a decorative composite. Possible inserts include paper, fabric, plant material, silk, wire and metal mesh. These options allow the glazing to contribute colour, texture or visual screening while retaining a bonded multi-pane construction.
Product configurations
Available configurations range from general laminated glass to more specialised multi-layer constructions, produced with either wet or dry bonding methods. Laminated assemblies can also be combined with insulating glass unit (IGU) construction. This allows the laminate to be coordinated with other glazing functions in a broader window or facade build-up.
For procurement, the required glass types, number of panes, interlayer material, bonding method and any decorative insert should be defined at the design stage.
